Bayerische Motoren Werke AG (BMW), is an independent German automobile manufacturer founded in 1916. BMW is a worldwide manufacturer of high-performance and premium automobiles and motorcycles, and is the current parent company of both the MINI and Rolls-Royce car brands.
The current 7 Series is available on four different platforms: the standard-wheelbase E65 (2990 mm, 118 in), the extended-wheelbase E66 (3130 mm, 123 in), the High Security version E67 and the hydrogen powered version E68. The E65/E66/E67/E68 7 Series features BMW's first of a kind iDrive system, consisting of a video screen in the dashboard and a controller mounted on the center console that is used in a similar way to a computer mouse. Using a system of eight menus, most of the car's climate, audio, navigation, suspension and communication settings are controlled via iDrive.
According to Top Gear, the BMW 7 Series garnered much praise: "You can have a three-litre petrol or a three-litre diesel. Both are good, but the latter is the limo-driver's weapon of choice thanks to 34.4mpg, 0-62mph in 7.8 seconds and 148mph. Better yet, there are four and five-litre V8s and a 6.0-litre V12 for those really in need of the ‘express' part of executive. The 750i gets 24mpg, hits 62mph from rest in 5.9 seconds and the usual 155mph limiter. The V12 isn't that much faster, but has a different jet-like character."
WhatCar gave the BMW 7 Series 5 out of 5 for safety and security, saying: " It's hard to imagine safer luxury transport. A tough passenger cell provides a strong safety platform to which a series of class-leading active safety technologies have been added. Computers control force and speed of airbag deployment; there are seatbelt force limiters front and rear, and the usual complement of stability, traction and brake-control systems."
